When you go after your dream, you must have a strong "Why" that will help you stay focused when people laugh at you. The reason has to be so powerful that when others take delight in laughing at your dreams, it only makes you work harder for what you want. You must have an unwavering belief that what you are doing is worth it and that it will be successful.

In the early stages of realizing my dream of becoming a Motivational Speaker, I took an opportunity to teach a workshop in a Juvenile Detention Center. There were 200 teens that I would be teaching Life, Job, Social and Emotional Skills to and I was determined to help as many of them as possible. Due to time constraints that the detention center put on my program, I could only teach 20-25 of the teens at a time which meant I would have to dedicate several weeks per dorm to reach as possible.

When the program began, it was running smoothly. The teens were very engaged and they would ask me to teach on certain topics which helped me create more material. Several months into the program, the guy who was employed by a non-profit organization that was paying me to do the program, got fired. This put me in a tough situation because driving almost 80 miles to the Juvenile Detention Center and buying supplies for the program would take a major toll on my business's budget if I were to continue the program myself.

It would have been logical to tell the teens I could no longer conduct the program. This never crossed my mind because I made a promise to each of them that I would not stop the program until I conducted it in every dorm. You see most of those teens had been abandon by a parent and other adults in their lives, so the last thing I wanted to become is another adult who made a promised and didn't fulfill it.

I started brainstorming ways I could fund my program and I got the idea of taking my G.H.E.T.T.O. acronym, Going Hard Even Through Tough Opposition, and put it on a t-shirt to sell. To my surprise, that shirt sold very well and I was able to use that money to fund my program. One day I was riding my bike in my neighborhood and I was wearing one of my G.H.E.T.T.O. T-shirts. This white car drove up beside me and there were two females in it. One of them pointed at me and said "LOOK AT HIS SHIRT!" They both started laughing at me as they drove off.

I was unfazed by it because what they didn't know that the reason I wore my shirt proudly is because that shirt allowed me to teach 200 teens Life, Job, Social and Emotional skills so they had tools that could help them make better decisions once released. My "WHY" was more powerful than their laugh and instead of me getting offended, it only encouraged me to work harder.

Now I have some questions for you. Is your "Why" more powerful than potential laughs that you will experience when you go after your dream? Is Your "Why" more powerful when you put your ideas into the world and people laugh at them? Is your "Why" more powerful when you have disappointments and people laugh at you? Is your "WHY" more powerful?

If you have an inch of doubt about the power of your "WHY" I encourage you to take the time and come up with a "WHY" that's so power that when people laugh at you, it won't faze you because you know that You Are WORTHY TO BE GREAT!!
